It depends on what "mechanism" you're referring to. I think the guy who
invented what was basically the first CD-ROM type device did all the work
in the early 1970s. There was an article about it in the past few months:
I can't remember if it was about the inventor getting money for his
inventions or if it was a "could have been rich if only..." story. Can't
find the article anymore.
