I don't think so. Camera lenses sometimes suffer from 'fungus' which is,
of course much the same thing. Often the surfaces of lens elements inside
the barrel (but not boneded to anything else) get attacked, and the
anti-reflection coatings _and the glass itself_ can get damaged.
