I think they only required the card if you wanted to display more than
the standard number (40? for Mac) number of lines. With the card you could
display an entire page (~66 lines) on one screen. I expect nearly everyone
bought the card, after all that was the entire purpose of having the taller
than wide screen format.
They came with a cable with a connector for a Mac but this one also has
an adapter cable to allow it to connect to a VGA card. I tried it on PC
and it does work. It's supposed to be usable for up to 600 x 800 resolution.
