I very much like the idea of such a list. Ever get into one of the editor
wars about which one was best? The answer to that question, BTW, is
obviously Brief :). Some people started programming with other editors such
as Vi or Emac without having had the opportunity to hear about real editors.
Same thing with computers; people need a place to start. With the collective
knowledge we have on this list, it is unlikely everyone would agree with
everything that should be included on such a list. But while most of us
probably have the overall knowledge to make such decisions, people new to
computer collecting probably don't. Experience and interaction with other
collectors will take care of that.

It made sense without the justification, but the list becomes more valuable
with the additional information.
