Ok sleuth(s),

More data. the ASR-33 was "typing" delete (0xff, 377 for you octaliens), I
tried putting a tape in the reader and the output changed to whatever
happened to be under the reader head at the moment (no the tape was not
advancing). I can now cause the letter of my choice to print by pressing
down the appropriate bits in the reader.

The reader power brick is/was getting quite warm. It could be bad. Pressing
the reader "off" lever had no effect on the behaviour.

Pressing the here-is key causes the here-is drum to roll through its cycle.

I'm looking up the power brick specs (which appears to be designed like the
old "killer" TV sets (that is not isolated at all!))

So a working theory is that the reader is stuck "on."

Now I also found out that switching to "Line" does in fact continue to run
so the reader may be a red herring. However in "line" mode the punch shows
that the typer is typing nul (ie 0x00 or 000).
