Is there such a thing as a ZIF socket for PLCC chips?

   Sure there are. Take a look at the RH adapter at <http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=1504&item=3309585666>. I run across stuff like this frequently. It won't be hard to take a socket made for something like an EPROM programmer and just wire it into your project.
