8" and 5.25" HD are fairly interchangeable. The above link discusses the
issues and has diagrams for cables either way.

Most new controllers can not handle FM (single density). If you only have
PCI slots and your controller does not work you can buy a Catweasel MK4
controller that handles just about anything (including hard sectored).
